The AVID Demonstration School

AVID National Demonstration Schools make an on-going commitment to excellence within their AVID elective classes, and site teams serve as catalysts for schoolwide change. These programs strive to achieve many of the following goals:

  • The AVID Program and the school have a well-articulated focus on student performance.
  • The site team’s strength is evident in their organizational approach and the diversity of disciplines represented.
  • The lead AVID Coordinator is complemented by other AVID teachers and/or co-coordinators.
  • Student advocacy permeates the school’s culture, reinforced by AVID students, the general student body, and the faculty.
  • There is strong articulation about AVID K-12.
  • The AVID Program has established a strong communication system that gives and receives information about students and about program needs and successes.
  • The school understands the importance of and consistently collects data to share throughout the community.
  • AVID curriculum and methodologies are observed schoolwide.
  • The AVID Coordinator and teachers are involved in leadership roles as staff developers and as prominent committee members on campus.
  • There is evidence of enthusiasm for AVID on campus and in the community (personal connections).
  • AVID functions as part of a responsive system.
  • Teachers write their own evaluation objectives to include a focus on AVID students in particular or underserved students in general.
  • A college-going culture is evident in the AVID classes and across campus.
  • The AVID tutors play a strong instructional and leadership role in AVID classes and are connected to the school’s culture and curriculum beyond AVID.
  • AVID students are leaders on campus and in the community.
  • The school publicizes AVID to garner widespread support form the community.
  • The school is proud to host visitors to its school.
